Did you see Timothy today? We went to our first couples therapy session together. I go to therapy on my own, and have always enjoyed it. Life passes by so quickly, and I like having an hour a week to reflect in an attempt to learn and grow from it all. Did anything interesting happen? She asked us straight away if Tim and I were attracted to each other. After some awkward glances, we both admitted that we do find each other attractive.

"40 Days of Dating" film: Warner Bros. buys rights to viral website

Sunday, February 1, , 2: Manhattanites and graphic designers Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh decided to find out — and the platonic friends embarked on the tenuous mission of dating each other for 40 days. The adventure was chronicled in a blog — and now a book — for all to see. The ground rules were simple: Now, a year and a half later, they have a book out under the same name, out Feb.

And no stone in their relationship is left unturned.

New York City-based designers and friends Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman may have found the perfect solution to fixing bad relationship habits. Or to killing friendships. We"re still not sure. In an (ingenious?) experiment they"ve simply called 40 Days of Dating, the duo has decided to"date" for.

Share The designers, Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman, two good friends who never dated conducted a day dating experiment. What started out as a self-exploration experiment turned into an experiment on user experience. They documented their experiences by writing a journal about their relationship at the end of each day, which they posted side-by-side on their website, fortydaysofdating.

Reading each of their journals reveals how although both experienced the same events, both interpreted them completely differently 4. Knowing this, how do you design a user experience? The term user experience in reference to designing one can be an ambiguous term because it is applied to everything. Its usage is so broad that it is turning into a meaningless term. First the deconstruction of the usage of the term user experience:

You may know this as the premise of their ridiculously-popular, exquisitely-designed blog 40 Days of Dating , which last week scored them a movie deal with Warner Bros, to be written by Lorene Scafaria of Nick and Nora"s Infinite Playlist.

Have there been any haters saying that the whole thing was just a gimmick now that you have the movie deal? I think what has taken people aback is how well-designed the blog is and that just helps the argument of,"Oh, this is just a PR stunt. That"s who we are! We just put this thing in the world. Many, many relationships begin as friendships. A suggestive look or touch or — we"re all adults here — one alcohol-fueled evening can trigger that tidal shift from"just friends" to"together. Frustrated with the New York City dating scene and tired of complaining to one another about their failed relationships, the platonic pair wondered: What would happen if they dated each other for 40 days — and strove to break their worst relationship habits in the process?

A self-described"hopeless romantic," Jessica would hurl herself into every new fling, only to be crushed when it didn"t work out. Tim, meanwhile, preferred juggling women to looking for"the one," and admitted he was worried about his inability to commit. Jessica and Timothy had to see each other every day, see a couples" therapist once a week, complete a daily questionnaire about their progress, go on at least three dates a week, and go on a weekend trip together.

Oh, and they couldn"t"see, date, hook up, or have sex with" anyone else. When two friends decide to create romance from scratch and document the details, you expect a fascinating sociological roller-coaster ride; when those friends are both designers, illustrators, and art directors, what you get is also a stunning viral blog and then a graphic, full-color book chronicling their experience.

This was another great design to add to my book collection. Timothy Goodman is also an art director and illustrator who runs his own studio in New York. The two of them have very different personalities and different dating styles, and despite having an immediate attraction to each other they never pursued a romantic relationship outside of their friendship.

The book began with an idea that was frowned upon by many friends of the pair. The two decided to start an experiment, based on the idea that it takes 40 days to change a habit, and started to date each other for 40 days. Following rules that they set for each other, they embarked on this dating experience hoping it may be possible for them to change their own bad dating habits, or even find love. In March of the pair of friends dated, drank, laughed and fought together all over NYC.

They recorded their experiences in questionnaires and personal journals which they began posting to a blog. The blog took off and gained a huge following. The book continues where the blog left off, answering the question: What happened after the 40 days? Overall I was very pleased with my purchase.
